What is a dental implant?
Dr. Casey Patterson describes the dental implant is a titanium tooth root restoration that is placed into the bone of the jaw during oral surgery. The upper part that extends above the gum line is called the abutment. The abutment can hold various types of restorations depending on the needs of the patient:
• Dental crown – in most cases, dental implants are used to replace a single tooth. In this situation, the dental implant is placed where the lost tooth once resided and is restored over the top with a dental crown. Dental crowns are ceramic “caps” that are often bonded over natural teeth to offer an extra layer of protection and strength. However, they can also be made to fit over a dental implant and act as a false tooth.
• Dental bridges – patients who are interested in a dental bridge will often require adjacent teeth to support the restoration on each side. However, if these teeth are not available, patients may decide to have a dental implant placed on one or both sides to anchor the bridge in place. The dental bridge can replace one or more teeth in a row in a more permanent manner than a partial denture alone.
• Denture – another use for dental implants is for the stabilization of full dentures. These dentures, known as implant-supported dentures, snap into place over several dental implants placed along the dental arch to eliminate the need for dental adhesives and improve self-confidence for patients.
